granada nicaragua
Granada is a city of great antiquity founded in 1524, making it the oldest city
in the Americas and one of the most popular destinations for travelers from around
the world. It is centrally located for easy access to many other destinations in
Nicaragua. In and around Granada you can view the giant pre-Colombian statues at
San Francisco Church, zip down the canopy lines on the slopes of Mombacho, tour
Las Isletas (300 island archipelago), lounge in Laguna de Apoyo, or simply enjoy
a horse drawn carriage ride through the quiet streets lined with Spanish Colonial
homes and grand churches (some more than 400 years old).
The city is always lively and filled with kind locals and international travelers.
Granada is also a restaurant town to be sure, and offers cuisine from around the
world at very reasonable prices.
Founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, Granada's
colonial architecture is stunning. Prior to being colonized by the Spanish and
becoming an important trade route, Granada was the site of many indigenous
communities and provided easy access to both the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts.
